New Addition to the Home

Oliver and I have successfully managed to keep two very large plants alive for over three years. We know we are definitely NOT ready for a kid and our apartment does not allow us to get a dog. So a cat was the natural choice.

I went to Animal Services located on 7th Ave with my pal Allison on Saturday and came home the very proud owner of Frankie the cat. He is a 4 month old, gray and black tabby with a very sweet disposition.

Oliver and I have been talking about getting a cat for well over a year, but the timing was just never right. With me being injured and most likely going to have surgery, it seemed like the right time for a cuddly companion.

So far so good - he does not seem to have any "bad cat" tendencies and Oliver and him have taken to each other.

One step closer to domestication . . .

Wedding Plans . . . Here We Go

I told Oliver last night that we basically have two weeks to find a location for the ceremony and book the Crepe Place for the reception.

I would really love to get married out in the forest somewhere. The requirements are: beautiful and cheap. I think we can accomplish that. So far the Santa Cruz Parks website has been no help at all and the fancier "Here Comes the Guide" website sorta scares the bejesus out of me - it's the kinda of site where everything that is listed is followed by multiple zeros.

Overall Wedding Goal: stylish, cheap and uncompromised

My mother is in my ear about an engagement announcement - in which I will be referred to as "Evelyn" which is my legal name, but I never introduce myself as "Evelyn" and 99% of the time people mispronounce it anyway. I think I might be able to state my case to her. The announcement is going to be accompanied by a photo of Ollie and me. Well, we had planned on our friend / my other derby wife Kelly doing the photo last week . . . and then I tore my ACL. So needless to say I'm trying to think of some creative ideas that involve me sitting. Mom I'll get it done I swear!

The wheels are starting to turn and our wedding is beginning to take form. It's nice to see that Oliver is just as excited as I am about the plans. I think having the team dynamic in the planning process will eliminate the "bridezilla" effect - although I'm hardly a diva, I could see myself getting stressed out with all the little details.

Speaking of which! Why is it my parents think I have no idea what I'm doing? I keep explaining to them do not expect conventional. The questions I'm getting from both of them are borderline hilarious: "Do you know you need to register?" "Are you doing a buffet or service?" "What exact shade of blue are thinking?"

I understand they are trying to be helpful but it is sorta funny . . . considering the circumstances. I'm almost 29 years old, work in PR and have helped planned many derby events. I have stated over and over again that Oliver and I do not want a traditional wedding - with that comes the traditional wedding details . . . I know they mean well.

I guess this is the first few steps in the right direction - I'm excited to see how everything pans out.

Archie Proposes to Veronica

How funny, right?

The irony of this for me is that on one of the old internal forums for my roller derby league I used a picture of Veronica as my avatar (My derby wife Virgina had a Betty one). We would actually execute a double team block we called "the Betty-Veronica Sandwich."

I've always been a fan of the comic books, but some how thought Archie would end up with Betty. Veronica always seemed like she was really superficial, but I guess Betty usually came off really . . . blonde? Come on, we all know Betty wasn't the sharpest fork in the drawer. Maybe she'll run off with Jughead . . . although I'm fairly certain he's gay (something about that hat).

After reading up on the news it actually turns out the six-part storyline is a flash forward or fantasy of one of the characters. Did you really expect Archie creators to age America's beloved teens permanently? Well either way I know I'll be collecting the short series.

Part of me can't help but be amused due to the timing and my physical similarities to Veronica . . . except I have real body proportions. After 70 years of chasing Archie the girl finally got her man. Shoot I only had to wait six years - guess I got off easy ;)

Great NPR story on the Archie news

Theme Change . . .

Something about calling Everyday Unconventionalism a "wedding blog" was leaving me a little unsatisfied. So in the spirit of my new journey I've tweaked it just a little bit.

Keira Knightley Loves Her Small Tatas Too!

Knightley: Mysteriously Chesty for Chanel

Evie Smith verses Raven Von Kaos

Yes! I already have a blog. Raven n Rollin has been going strong (maybe not strong . . . determined?) for over a year and half now. I have been finding that I'm posting about my non-derby life more and more and have been thinking there really needs to be a division of church and state, or in my case life and skate.

So here it is, Evie Smith's blog page. For the next year I will be keeping the world abreast of my wedding plans and domestic accomplishments. I've recently started cooking and adventuring into big stores with rows and rows of food - I believe normal people call this "Grocery Shopping" - never really been my thing.

The most important thing to me with the wedding is making sure to keep it Ollie and Evie style and not breakdown under the pressures of friends and family to sway towards the traditional. I swear to Buddha if one person mutters the words "wedding edict" I will elope dammit!

Oliver and I sorta snear at stereotypical traditions and expectations and like to make our own waves. Not to say that we're not domesticated, we just got there on our own terms. We do things because we want to, not because it's whats expected of us.

I'm finally ready to do things like cooking, cleaning (not just when people are coming over) and overall finally sticking my toe in the domesticated woman pool. I think I can finally find that balance between Joan Jett and Joan Cleaver.

Here goes nothing . . .
